Charles Leclerc's five-second penalty during the Mexico City Grand Prix has sparked a debate among Formula 1 enthusiasts. Some argue that the sanction was excessively lenient, while others maintain that he shouldn't have faced any punishment at all.

The Ferrari racer maneuvered around polesitter and teammate Lewis Hamilton at Turn 4 on the first lap. Both cars went off the track, but Leclerc emerged ahead after being compelled to cut the corner.

Following a review, the stewards issued the Monegasque a five-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, but by that stage, Leclerc had already established a lead in clean air, which is crucial at the Mexican circuit.

Hamilton expressed his dissatisfaction over the radio, stating: “The issue with the five-second penalty is that he has clean air. He doesn’t have to manage his pace like the rest of us. He should simply relinquish the position."

Max Verstappen, who had ascended to second place, found humor in the situation: “Ha! I thought all the new penalties were ten seconds?”

A significant number of fans aligned with the two world champions.

“I think that’s an extremely soft penalty for Leclerc. This means you might as well drive off the track and gain the advantage if you can sprint ahead while the FIA takes twelve laps to reach a conclusion,” wrote one user on X.

Another remarked: “A five-second penalty for Leclerc. He deserved more.”

“A five-second penalty is insufficient when Leclerc is already 3.5 seconds ahead of Verstappen and more than five seconds clear of Hamilton, all while benefiting from clear air, which is massive here,” a third user noted.

Conversely, some believed Leclerc had outsmarted the situation. Broadcaster Tom Gaymor commented: “Charles knew precisely what he was doing, braking to be ahead at the apex rather than making the corner, clearly gaining an advantage and leaving the stewards to sort it out, all while having clean air and not losing a position—worst-case scenario is a five-second penalty!”

Yet, many fans felt that Leclerc was unfairly treated and directed their anger at Hamilton instead.

“A five-second penalty is absurd; penalize Hamilton too because if he hadn’t pushed him off, he actually makes the corner,” one fan wrote.

A post from the fan account CL16 inside, which received over 500 likes, simply stated: “Five-second time penalty for Charles. What a joke.”

F1 journalist Thomas Maher also believed neither driver warranted a penalty.

“I don’t think either Ferrari driver deserves any reprimand from the stewards for that. Hamilton attempted to be assertive, but Leclerc was on the outside and couldn’t just disappear. Charles wasn’t going to be intimidated out of his move around the outside,” he wrote.

Ultimately, a more nuanced opinion emerged: “Very aggressive move by Leclerc, very forceful defense by Lewis,” another user commented.
