As Congolese football aims to reclaim its place at the top of the continent, iconic coach Claude Le Roy spoke to RMC Sport to share crucial details about his return and the revival of the Red Devils. The French tactician highlighted the significant impact of President Denis Sassou Nguesso in improving the working conditions of the national team.
Reflecting on the team's recent history, the experienced coach recalled the difficult period Congo has faced on the African stage since its last victorious campaign. “Congo has not qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for some time. The last time was eleven years ago when I was already in charge of the team. We reached the quarter-finals then,” the coach stated, emphasizing the demands of high-level continental competition.
Detailing the reasons for his new mission with the Red Devils, Claude Le Roy directly attributed his return to intervention at the highest level of the state. “If I am back today, it is largely thanks to the head of state. This return was not planned initially. He wanted the players to be placed in good conditions to work and defend the colors of the national team,” he revealed.
For many years, Congolese players faced enormous structural and logistical difficulties that hindered their sporting performances. “The unfortunate Congolese players endured terrible conditions for a good ten years, with issues related to transport and accommodation, bonuses… In short, nothing was put in place to put them in the best conditions,” lamented the former Congo coach candidly on RMC Sport.
Today, the improvement of the logistical and financial environment surrounding the Red Devils removes any external excuses in case of underperformance. “Now, we can say that if we do not qualify, it will not be the fault of any individual. It will be because we faced stronger opponents or because we did not rise to the occasion,” warned Claude Le Roy, placing all stakeholders before their responsibilities.
Now freed from non-sporting constraints, the players of Congo operate in a professional environment conducive to great results. “Everything is being done to ensure that the players are in the best conditions. And this is what allows for the creation of a new, rather positive mindset,” concluded the coach, full of hope regarding Congo's chances of securing a spot in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
