George Russell, the Mercedes driver, achieved a commanding pole-to-flag victory at the F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, navigating two safety car periods to outpace Max Verstappen and secure his third win of the 2026 season.

Russell secured pole position by a significant margin of eight tenths on Friday, reinforcing Mercedes' superiority in race conditions. The British driver maintained his lead despite the interruptions from two mid-race safety cars, earning his first victory since the Austrian Grand Prix in June, while teammate Kimi Antonelli made a remarkable recovery from 16th to finish fifth.

At the race's outset, Russell had a strong launch, successfully defending his lead in the brief sprint to Turn 1, as Oscar Piastri overtook Charles Leclerc, who started in second.

Starting on medium tyres while his closest competitors opted for softs, tyre wear was not a significant concern on the low-impact street circuit, simplifying the race strategy to a straightforward one-stop at an optimal time.

The Briton quickly established a gap from the pack, while Piastri and teammate Lando Norris, who had passed Isack Hadjar for fourth, faced immediate pressure from the two Red Bulls. Hadjar and Verstappen seemed to have an advantage on the straights compared to the Mercedes-powered cars, which also struggled for grip coming out of Turn 16, the corner that leads onto Baku's extensive 2km straight.

After Verstappen maneuvered past Pierre Gasly and Lewis Hamilton, both he and Hadjar advanced on Norris, with Hadjar allowing his teammate to pass. However, as Verstappen encountered graining issues with his medium tyres, his attempt to challenge Piastri faltered, leading Hadjar to become eager to attack the McLaren driver instead.

Just as Hadjar was poised to begin his challenge against Verstappen, the race encountered a safety car situation on lap 30 of 51 due to a crash involving Alex Albon. The Williams driver, battling Esteban Ocon for a distant 13th place, locked up into Turn 5 and collided with the TecPro barriers upon exit, fortunately escaping injury.

With all leading contenders yet to complete their single pit stop, the interruption spurred a flurry of activity in the pit lane, with Russell maintaining his lead ahead of Piastri, Verstappen, Hadjar, Leclerc, and Hamilton, while Norris fell to ninth behind Gasly and Antonelli after misjudging his entry into Turn 1.

This mistake would prove costly for Norris as chaos ensued during the Lap 36 restart. While Verstappen overtook Piastri for second, Franco Colapinto locked his tyres and collided with his Alpine teammate Gasly, resulting in Norris being taken out as Antonelli narrowly avoided the wreckage. In the background, further intra-team contact occurred as Arvid Lindblad sent Liam Lawson spinning, prompting yet another safety car.

The entire top 10 held their positions during a more cautious second restart on lap 39, with Russell leading from Verstappen, Piastri, Hadjar, and Leclerc. However, Piastri faced more Baku drama on the next lap, going too deep into Turn 1 while defending against Hadjar, losing out on a possible podium finish.

Amidst the turmoil, the double neutralization transformed what should have been a straightforward run to the finish for Russell into a tense battle, as he fended off a determined challenge from the four-time world champion Verstappen.

Ultimately, Russell managed to maintain his lead in a dramatic race to the finish, holding off Verstappen, with Hadjar joining the duo on the podium in his return from injury. Leclerc finished fourth ahead of Antonelli.

As Antonelli had anticipated prior to the race, replicating his remarkable comeback win in Monza was going to be a challenging task on the streets of Baku. The championship leader had climbed to eighth by the time the race was neutralized and later capitalized on the Turn 1 chaos to overtake Hamilton for fifth.

Lindblad finished seventh, pending any review into his contact with Lawson. Haas' Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman crossed the line in eighth and ninth, while Carlos Sainz limped to a points finish in a heavily modified Williams car.

Both Aston Martin cars once again failed to reach the finish, marking another disastrous weekend for the team, while Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas ended his race in the wall on the final lap.

With this being his third win of the season and first since Austria, Russell gained 15 points on Antonelli in the championship standings, now trailing his teammate by 66 points as the series heads to the Bahrain Grand Prix next weekend in Malaysia.
