Kozo Tashima is the second candidate to announce his intention to challenge Infantino, following former Swiss defender of Tottenham, Ramon Vega. « With the full support of the JFA, I have decided to run for the FIFA presidential election», said Tashima, 68, who has been a member of the FIFA Council. « I believe it is essential that the sincerity, integrity, and high ethical standards that Japanese football values and has long cultivated are clearly expressed to the global football community», he added.

Building on “the experience accumulated over the years”

Kozo Tashima aims to “share these values with the world and contribute to a better future for football”. Tashima, who led the JFA from 2016 to 2024, wishes to build on “the experience accumulated over the years”. «I will take on this challenge with strong determination so that I can participate in the ongoing development of global football. »

The deadline for candidates to declare for this election is set for November 18. At the helm of the global governing body of football since 2016, the Italo-Swiss Gianni Infantino, 56, remains the frontrunner in this election, which will take place during the FIFA Congress on March 18, 2027, in Rabat, despite the criticism he has received following the announcement of a failed project to create a company open to private investors.

However, Infantino is now in a favorable position to secure his reelection after the Asian Football Confederation showed its support for the 56-year-old last month. Infantino had previously stated that he enjoyed the support of the “very, very large majority” of member associations and dismissed calls for his departure.
