George Russell commended for candid acknowledgment regarding Kimi Antonelli's performance in F1
Former Formula 1 competitor David Coulthard has commended George Russell for his candid acknowledgment that his Mercedes teammate and current championship frontrunner Kimi Antonelli is outperforming him.
Antonelli achieved his eighth win of the season at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit, broadening his lead in the standings to 81 points ahead of Russell, who is in second place. Russell, on the other hand, managed to secure a fifth-place finish.
The British driver entered the season-opening Australian Grand Prix as one of the top contenders for the title. However, after a victory in Melbourne and the following sprint race in China, he watched his championship aspirations fade as Antonelli continued to dominate with successive wins.
During a discussion on the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard, a 13-time grand prix victor, praised Russell for his honesty in media interviews regarding the fact that his teammate is currently performing at a higher level.
"What we're witnessing is similar to how this year's formula has favored Lewis [Hamilton] more in comparison to Charles [Leclerc]. There's been a shift in their performance from last season to this one," he remarked.
"Oscar [Piastri] has seen a decline in form compared to Lando [Norris], where he was leading the world championship until Baku last year. So, it’s a matter of ups and downs with this formula.

"We've got Kimi coming into his own while George is feeling the pressure. But to give credit to George, he's come to terms with it. He's facing the media head-on. He's responding to the inquiries.
"He did a conversation with Martin Brundle over the weekend where he stated, 'Kimi is simply executing better than I am at this moment.' I think that takes a lot of courage to admit publicly.
"We would all have those thoughts, but sometimes racing drivers tend to avoid facing reality, offering one excuse after another. But I have faith in George. I empathize with him. It's a championship that seems to be slipping away, yet he is still early in his career and will certainly have his moment."
