Riyad Mahrez, recently transferred to Al Shamal, will have to wait a bit longer before making his competitive debut, but he has a clear goal in mind: to be in top shape in a month and a half!

A new jersey, new teammates, and possibly a reunion with a club that has marked his recent career. Riyad Mahrez has joined Al Shamal in Qatar, but his continental schedule already includes a special match against Al Ahli, his former Saudi club.

For now, uncertainty surrounds his first steps with his new Qatari club. While Al Shamal is set to face Iranian side Tractor next Monday in the Elite Asian Champions League, the participation of the Algerian international is not yet guaranteed.

His coach, David Prats, has decided to wait before commenting on his availability, “We will see if he is fully ready and able to play. We will assess his conditioning,” said the Spanish manager.

The coach also emphasized the importance of protecting his new recruit, whom he wants to see perform at his best, both physically and mentally:
“What we desire is for him to be well integrated with us, as he is part of the team. His arrival is a significant signing, he is a key player and we are looking forward to him. However, we also want to protect him, as we want to see him at his best, both physically and mentally. In any case, if he is fit to play, he will obviously be with the group,” the Spaniard clarified.

He added: “He is a player of a very high level, which is why we are eagerly awaiting him. We will evaluate his condition because, as you know, he was not with the team until yesterday.”

Reunion on the Horizon

Although his debut still depends on his physical condition, the match on November 23 against Al Ahli in the Elite Asian Champions League already represents a significant moment in his new journey.

Indeed, the former captain of the Greens spent three seasons with the Saudi club, which he joined in 2023, and played a key role in their two consecutive victories in the Elite Asian Champions League in 2025 and 2026, before leaving the team last summer.

His arrival in Qatar allows him to continue his journey in a competition he knows perfectly well.

It remains to be seen if he will have enough time to regain his form with Al Shamal before facing his former team, this time in a different jersey.
