Following Kimi Antonelli's first Formula 1 world championship victory at the Mexico Grand Prix, Mercedes is on the verge of securing a ninth constructors’ title in Brazil.

The Silver Arrows have triumphed in 12 out of 19 grands prix this season, positioning them firmly at the top of the standings. Ferrari remains the only team with a mathematical chance to overtake them, but with a 126-point gap, that’s a significant challenge.

Mercedes had an initial chance to clinch the title in Mexico, which required a 1-2 finish along with Ferrari scoring no more than four points. This time, the difference means the Brackley-based team only needs to outscore the Scuderia by a minimum of three points in Sao Paulo.

Ways in which Mercedes can secure the title at the Brazil GP

    • Both Mercedes drivers finish in the points and ahead of the Ferraris
    • Mercedes achieves a 1-2, 1-3, or 1-4 finish
    • Mercedes ends up 2-3 or 2-4 while Ferrari does not win
    • Both Mercedes cars finish in the top five, with no Ferrari on the podium
    • Antonelli or Russell places in the top eight, and both Ferraris retire

Throughout the first 19 rounds of the season (excluding sprint races), Mercedes has outscored Ferrari by three points or more on ten occasions.

The 2026 season signifies the first occasion since 1955 that Mercedes has secured world titles without Lewis Hamilton, with the young Antonelli stepping up to the forefront.

“The championships with Lewis were truly remarkable and fulfilling,” team principal Toto Wolff stated.

“I felt that we were all part of Lewis' legacy, the greatest champion, and that in years to come, we would reflect and say, ‘We were world champions with Lewis Hamilton’. This is something I still think about a lot. He has remained significant and culturally relevant beyond Formula 1.

“So those championships were incredibly special for me, and I will carry them with me for a lifetime, and this one feels different. As I've mentioned before, for me, [Kimi] is still the kid who hasn’t changed much visually.

“It's very refreshing. I reached out to him a few weeks back and asked, ‘Where's Kimi?’. Kimi, for his birthday, is at the water park. Fantastic! And as long as we can help preserve it, he is connected with Mercedes, which is wonderful to witness.”
