Infantino expresses commitment to increasing support for federations.

Gianni Infantino, the Swiss-Italian president of FIFA, has opened the door to significant increases in funding for its 211 member federations. The FIFA Council is set to discuss additional payments during its upcoming meeting on October 15.

In a letter sent on Monday to the presidents of FIFA's six continental federations, which was obtained by AFP, Infantino confirmed that he would support "the maximum possible additional funding that can be responsibly provided," but warned that any figure currently under discussion does not represent a formal commitment.

The FIFA president noted that the abandoned proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights of the World Cup, which sparked calls for his resignation, was primarily aimed at providing additional resources for football. He wrote: "The goal of the recent commercial proposal, which has now been withdrawn, was to enable FIFA to invest more in football."

On September 18, Infantino faced criticism from Slovenian Aleksander Čeferin, president of UEFA, and Canadian Victor Montagliani, his counterpart at CONCACAF, who stated that each FIFA member federation should receive $10 million during the period from 2027 to 2030.

Infantino responded by expressing his willingness to engage with any other proposals, stating: "I will support the maximum possible additional funding that can be responsibly provided through the proper governance processes followed by FIFA."

FIFA confirmed in September that Infantino will run for re-election in the upcoming March elections, despite the backlash over his later-abandoned plan to attract private investments for the men's and women's World Cups.

Infantino is not alone, as Saudi Arabia, which will host the 2034 World Cup, expressed its support for him last month, and both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) have also shown their backing.
