James Hinchcliffe: Williams F1's weight advancement provides "extra lap time" in Baku

"It's free lap time. It doesn't need any adjustments to the setup. It doesn't require any special driving skills. It's essentially akin to horsepower. It’s just free lap time, so it’s incredibly important," Hinchcliffe articulated.

"It's absolutely vital. It’s one of the significant enhancements we've observed from several other teams that began the season with excess weight. Consider Red Bull; they commenced on the heavier side.

"Thus, this will be a tremendous relief for the drivers, and a significant advantage for the engineers. It benefits everything: brakes, traction, tire wear, and of course, outright lap speed. So, if they're indeed at this point, that alone is going to provide them with a substantial edge."

Williams FW48 technical detail

While the enhancements are expected to assist Williams in contending further up the grid, team principal James Vowles has moderated expectations ahead of the race weekend.

"It's been a challenging year, and it will remain tough until the end," the Brit stated during an appearance on The Fast And The Curious podcast.

"There’s just no denying it. Many of the errors we made over the winter period will linger with us throughout this season. What we’re aiming to do is to get ourselves back to a competitive position by the time we enter next year’s car.

"There will be incremental progress this year, but it won’t be sufficient to even reach the minimum standard of where I'd like us to be, which is earning points over a weekend.

"That simply isn’t the reality of our current situation. However, for next year, do I believe we’ll make advancements on the grid? Yes. It’s tough to go backwards on the grid. We will progress on the grid as a consequence, but it will still be a challenging endeavor."
