Lionel Messi will play his final international match with Argentina in a specially designed jersey for the occasion, the superstar revealed on his Instagram account on Monday night. The 39-year-old will face Benin on October 6 at River Plate's Monumental Stadium.
At the end of August, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner had already announced his retirement from the national team. After the defeat in the World Cup final against Spain, Messi's international career seemed over, but on October 6, the Argentine will make his return to the national team one last time for a farewell match.
The president of the Federation, Claudio Tapia, announced the news of this farewell through a video message. “We have decided to invite the best player in the world, an icon of our national team, our captain, Lionel Messi, for the farewell he deserves. The last tango of the best player in the world.”
The international with 207 caps, world champion with Argentina in 2022, among other honors, will face Benin in a jersey specially designed for the occasion.
On his Instagram account, Messi showcased this jersey, a result of collaboration with Adidas. In the caption of his post, the superstar wrote: “The last match, one last time on the field with a jersey for life.”
