At 39 years old, he was once again the key player in an annual clash between the champion of Major League Soccer (MLS) and the champion of Mexican football.

He opened the scoring with a header close to the goal in the 24th minute, assisted by his former Barcelona teammate, Luis Suarez, marking his 100th goal in 115 matches with Inter Miami across all competitions.

In a twist of fate, he had scored his first goal with the Florida team against the same club, Cruz Azul, from a free kick in early July 2023.

To seal the score on Wednesday, he provided an assist from a corner for Brazilian Casemiro in the 81st minute (2-0).

We have to enjoy it, because we don’t know how much longer it will last. What he has accomplished and continues to achieve for football is simply incredible (...). He remains the best, he proved it during the World Cup and continues to demonstrate it in MLS,” said the former Real Madrid player, impressed by his teammate, after the match.

After a brilliant World Cup (8 goals from Messi) where Argentina finished as runners-up, the "Pulga" is in the running this year for a ninth Ballon d'Or.

He announced his international retirement at the end of August and will play his last match with the Albiceleste on October 6 in Buenos Aires.
