The Spanish Football Federation has renewed the contract of national team coach Luis de la Fuente until 2032, honoring him for the success he achieved with "La Roja" by winning the World Cup this summer, two years after claiming the UEFA Euro 2024.
The Spanish Federation announced on Monday that the 65-year-old coach will continue to lead the team in the UEFA Euro 2028 and 2032, as well as the 2030 World Cup, which will be held in Spain in collaboration with Morocco, Portugal, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina.
The renewal of de la Fuente's contract comes after a remarkable period in charge of the Spanish national team since he took over at the end of 2022, succeeding Luis Enrique, the current coach of Paris Saint-Germain. He managed to bring Spain back to the global stage, winning the UEFA Nations League in 2023, then the UEFA Euro 2024, leading the team to its second World Cup title this summer in the United States.
De la Fuente has become the most successful coach in the history of the Spanish national team, adding to his achievements with the senior team what he previously accomplished with the youth teams, most notably the UEFA Euro Under-21 in 2019, in a career that has spanned 14 years within the Spanish Football Federation.
Spanish Federation President Rafael Lusan stated that de la Fuente "deserves a long future" in his role as coach, adding: "We are talking here about the most successful coach in the history of the national team, and after fourteen years with us, Luis de la Fuente deserves this honor and a long future with the Spanish Football Federation."
The Spanish coach aims to continue the success streak and try to replicate the golden period the team experienced between 2008 and 2012, when they won the UEFA Euro twice and claimed the World Cup in between.
The Spanish national team will play its first match after its World Cup victory against England on September 26, before hosting Croatia three days later in Seville as part of their UEFA Nations League campaign, and then facing the Czech Republic in Oviedo on October 3, with the international break concluding with another match against Croatia three days later.
