A "heartwarming" encounter between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton has taken the internet by storm following the qualifying session for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

Verstappen achieved the first non-Mercedes pole of the 2026 season at the Sepang International Circuit, while Hamilton secured second place for Ferrari, marking his fifth straight front-row appearance at this venue.

In spite of their turbulent history, the two champions were captured sharing a friendly moment in parc ferme after exiting their vehicles.

Fans promptly lauded the scene on social media. "Divorced couple, but genuinely happy for each other," one user commented on Reddit, while another remarked: "Heartwarming, yet I sensed Hamilton was trying to keep his distance from MBS as much as possible."

"If only the fans could demonstrate as much respect for one another as these two champion drivers," another user reflected.

Additional comments included: "Game recognizes game," and "Max has been waiting for this embrace since that memorable race years ago when he attempted to engage Lewis in conversation on the way to the podium and Lewis wasn’t receptive."

Others expressed their anticipation for the possibility of the previously fierce rivalry between Verstappen and Hamilton flaring up at the race's onset. "2021 flashbacks," another fan shared.

As they look forward to the race, Hamilton identified tyre degradation as the primary hurdle, while also recognizing Verstappen's strong long-run performance in the upgraded Red Bull.

"I’m much more satisfied with the car's current state, but tomorrow will present an entirely different scenario," the seven-time champion noted. "Managing these tyres around this track is crucial – they start overheating almost immediately.

"Every instance of wheelspin, every minor slip, impacts how far you can go.

"I like to believe we’ve achieved a good balance. Max was exceptionally fast during his long runs, so I’ll do my utmost to keep pace with him tomorrow."
