Max Verstappen, a four-time Formula 1 champion, has reacted to Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff's assertion that the age of the "ruthless" F1 driver has concluded.

Following Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli securing his first world championship at the Mexican Grand Prix last weekend, Wolff cited the 20-year-old as an example of a new breed of champion.

"The idea of winning at any cost, being selfish, opportunistic, and ruthless for personal gain, that archetype of racing driver is no more," Wolff stated.

"We now have a champion who embodies principles such as humility, integrity, loyalty, respect, and authenticity. He should serve as a role model for many other young drivers in lower formulas and for the few privileged ones in Formula 1, those who incessantly complain on the radio and crash."

While Wolff refrained from naming any specific drivers, Verstappen and two-time champion Fernando Alonso were asked for their perspectives during the drivers' press conference at Interlagos.

"I mean, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, right? I don’t really have much more to add," Verstappen remarked. "Every individual is unique. I believe that’s beneficial for Formula 1; if everyone shared the same personality, it would be quite dull."

Alonso was asked to express his views on Wolff's remarks, but chose to abstain.

Verstappen was more forthcoming when the discussion shifted to his own radio communications, which have frequently included grievances about the car this season.

"When you hear me making comments about shifts or whatever, it’s simply because I’m never content; I believe certain aspects can always improve, and I continually strive to fine-tune and enhance," the Dutch driver clarified.

"So if it comes across as complaining, it’s primarily to ensure that the team is constantly examining the details in pursuit of additional lap time, because I know there’s more potential there."

Verstappen currently holds second place in the drivers' standings as he approaches the Brazilian Grand Prix.
