This weekend’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix will showcase a fresh look for the Mercedes team, as reigning champion Kimi Antonelli and George Russell don striking purple race suits, departing from their traditional black and turquoise attire.

The new design was unveiled on Tuesday at the Nubank Parque in Sao Paulo, home to the football club Palmeiras, marking the collaboration with Brazilian bank Nubank. Both drivers will sport these suits throughout the race weekend.

“Inspired by the past. Built for the New. Welcome, to the Nu Era,” Antonelli posted on Instagram. “New look for this weekend!”

Crafted by Mercedes, the suits take inspiration from the designs of the 1980s and 1990s, an era when legends Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna secured their championships. The campaign’s tagline is “Inspired by the Golden Era, Built for the New Era.”

The two shades derive from Nubank’s branding. The dark hue is from Ultravioleta, its premium card, while the lighter purple symbolizes its largest customer demographic.

The announcement was accompanied by a film featuring both drivers, narrated by Gabriel Leone, who portrayed Senna in Netflix’s series about the three-time champion. The soundtrack, Tema da Vitoria, is the iconic tune that TV Globo aired during Brazilian victories in F1, deeply linked to Senna’s legacy.

This marks the second occasion in 2026 that Mercedes has embraced this theme. At the Miami Grand Prix in May, the team showcased three different purple suits across the weekend, each design reflecting coordinates related to Nubank’s growth. Antonelli clinched victory in that race.

Victoria Johnson, head of marketing operations at Mercedes, expressed that the enthusiasm surrounding those suits inspired the team to elevate the concept for Sao Paulo.

“Our partnership with Nu focuses on innovative and impactful methods to connect fans with our team. The purple race suits perfectly embody that vision, merging Nu’s distinct identity with ours while honoring Brazil’s immense passion for Formula 1. Following the response to our purple suits in Miami earlier this year, we’re thrilled to expand this idea in Sao Paulo and create something exceptional for one of the most fervent race weekends of the season.”

Nubank co-founder Cristina Junqueira noted: “The Sao Paulo Grand Prix holds special significance for Brazilians, for Nubank, as it occurs in the city where it was established, and for the drivers of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team.”

The suits will also be displayed at the Nubank House, a complimentary exhibition for the bank’s clients running at the stadium until Sunday. This includes a replica W17 and a suit worn by Lewis Hamilton in 2021.

Nubank reports that interest in F1 is rapidly increasing in Brazil. According to Ibope data, the first 10 races of 2026 reached 52.8 million viewers in the country, already surpassing the total audience of the entire 2025 season.

Mercedes may have more to celebrate than just a new appearance if the weekend unfolds in their favor, as the team has the opportunity to secure the constructors’ championship at Interlagos.
