Rafael Camara, the leader of the Formula 2 championship, is set to make his Formula 1 debut with Haas in 2027, likely partnering with Oliver Bearman.

The 21-year-old Brazilian will take over from Esteban Ocon, who is departing the American team after two lackluster seasons, with his exit confirmed on September 30.

Camara has swiftly ascended through the lower tiers, clinching the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship and the 2025 F3 championship titles, both achieved with dominating performances.

If he secures the F2 title for Invicta - currently leading Nikola Tsolov by seven points - he would be the first driver to win FRECA, F3, and F2 championships in consecutive years.

“I’m thrilled to be joining TGR Haas F1 Team as a Formula 1 driver,” remarked Camara, who has inked a “multi-year” contract.

“This is a significant milestone in my career, and I’d like to express my gratitude to Gene Haas and Ayao Komatsu for their confidence in me.

“I’m also very thankful to the Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy for their backing and all they have done to aid my growth over the years, as well as to my family for their unwavering support throughout this journey.

“My immediate focus is on preparing myself as thoroughly as possible for this new challenge. There will be a lot to absorb, and I’m eager to collaborate closely with the team, understand the car, and continue evolving as a driver.”

Although Haas took its time to announce this decision, it was widely anticipated that Camara would secure the seat, surpassing contenders like reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa.

All three have participated in TPC (Testing of Previous Cars) programs for Haas, with a notable three-day test at Portimao in August aimed at assessing all candidates.

Camara’s status as a Ferrari academy graduate, similar to Bearman, likely bolstered his chances, given the strong ties between Scuderia and Haas, which supplies many components including the power unit.

Team principal Ayao Komatsu stated: “I’m genuinely excited to welcome such a young, remarkable talent like Rafael Camara.

“I don’t need to elaborate on his accomplishments in the junior categories; they’ve been truly impressive. In his rookie Formula 2 season, the speed he displayed in challenging situations, like qualifying in Monaco and Montreal, underscores the potential Rafa possesses.

“During our TPC program in Portugal, he demonstrated that he could manage himself exceptionally well, even with limited time to familiarize himself with the car, revealing more than just raw speed.

“Rafa has created an environment that allows him to optimize his performance, which was quite impressive, and the laps he completed were noteworthy.

“We’re all looking forward to this opportunity and are committed as TGR Haas F1 Team to cultivate this talent and provide a platform where he can thrive.

“We aim to establish an environment where he feels comfortable and supported, enabling him to truly excel in his abilities.”

This announcement leaves only three seats theoretically available for 2027, two at Racing Bulls, where it is anticipated they will retain Liam Lawson and the promising rookie Arvid Lindblad.

The remaining seat alongside Camara is widely expected to go to Bearman, 21, who has made a strong impression since entering as a rookie last year.
