While Sir Patrick Stewart is widely recognized for his roles in franchises like Star Trek and X-Men, Formula 1 enthusiasts will fondly remember him as a passionate advocate for motorsport. In Montreal during 2017, he showcased his enthusiasm by sipping champagne from Daniel Ricciardo's racing boot on the podium.

The esteemed actor passed away at the age of 86 in his Los Angeles residence after what was characterized as a short and private struggle with both Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. However, prior to his demise, he led a remarkable life, characterized not only by numerous philanthropic acts but also by indulging in life’s luxuries—one of which was enjoying champagne on the podium at the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton, the victor of the Montreal race, stood alongside his teammate Valtteri Bottas, while Ricciardo secured third place for Red Bull. Stewart took the lead in the interviews, commencing with his renowned theatrical flair:

“Congratulations, Lewis. You might suggest that there’s nothing quite like a serene, leisurely drive along the river on a Sunday afternoon in Montreal. But this was a bit different, wasn’t it?” he remarked. Yet, it was his interaction with Ricciardo that captured worldwide attention.

The Australian had made the shoey his trademark podium celebration, drinking champagne from his racing boot, and the Montreal crowd was well aware of what was about to unfold.

“I think I hear something… I need to do something,” Ricciardo stated, before gulping champagne from his boot and then passing it to Stewart.

The then-76-year-old wasted no time, drinking from the boot to the roaring approval of the fans below.

“This is turning into a tradition! Good vintage! Cheers!” Stewart exclaimed.

Hamilton, who had just equaled Ayrton Senna’s record of 65 pole positions the day prior, was taken aback.

“I’m impressed you did that! It’s something I couldn’t manage. Have you seen how sweaty his feet are?” Hamilton commented.

Stewart’s response quickly spread across social media.

“I don’t mind – I’m on the podium for the first time; I’ll drink from anyone’s shoe!”

The lightheartedness continued as Stewart inquired of Hamilton how it felt to lead every lap from pole position. “I’ll tell you that in a moment, but can you read my mind?” Hamilton replied.

“Yes. You’re happy!” Stewart responded, before energizing the crowd with: “Do you hear that, Canada? Montreal – what he said!”

The clip gained significant traction online. “The first knight of the realm to perform a shoey at the Canadian GP," Sky Sports reported at the time.

Ricciardo, who exited F1 in 2024, continued to perform several shoeys throughout his career, but few could compare to the memorable one he shared with Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
