Rodriguez Announces International Retirement
James Rodriguez, the star of the Colombian national football team, has announced his retirement from international play after 15 years representing his country.
In an emotional video on social media, Rodriguez, 35, said: “Today, I want to speak from the depths of my heart. After many years, many matches, and moments filled with joy; along with difficult times... I feel that the time has come to close a chapter that is one of the most important chapters of my life.”
Rodriguez leaves the national team as the record holder for the most appearances for Colombia, having played 131 international matches. He scored 31 goals, making him the second-highest scorer in the country's history, behind Radamel Falcao.
The former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich player confirmed: “Wearing this jersey was a dream; but it was also a huge responsibility.”
Rodriguez witnessed the highlights of his international career during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he scored six goals and won the “Golden Boot,” helping Colombia reach the quarter-finals for the first time.
He also contributed to Colombia's run to the Copa America final in 2024, where the Colombian team lost 1-0 to Argentina in extra time.
The Colombian player said: “Thank you for every match, every joy, every tear, and every dream we lived together. Defending the colors of the Colombian national team has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Thank you, Colombia… forever.”
Ramon Jesurun, president of the Colombian Football Federation, praised James Rodriguez, calling him a “legend” who transformed Colombian football.
Jesurun said: “James Rodriguez carried the pride of an entire country… to the pinnacle of world football.”
