The Egyptian Football Association is moving towards approving the request submitted by Somali referee Omar Artan to settle in Egypt and officiate in the Egyptian Premier League during the current 2026-2027 season. This will be discussed in the upcoming council meeting after Essam Abdel Fattah, head of the Egyptian referees committee, received an official request from the Somali referee to manage matches in the tournament.

Omar Artan Requests to Officiate in the Egyptian League

Essam Abdel Fattah revealed that the Somali referee contacted him and expressed his desire to settle in Egypt and work in the field of officiating in the Egyptian league. The head of the referees committee stated that Omar Artan sent an official request expressing his wish to take on this experience, confirming that the referees committee welcomes his request, which will be presented to the board of the Football Association for a final decision.

Abdel Fattah added that if the board of the Football Association approves the request, the Somali referee will join the Egyptian officiating system during the current season.

The officials of the Egyptian Football Association are studying the Somali referee's request, which has become official, and there is a strong inclination to approve this request.

World Cup Crisis Behind Somali Referee's Career Shift

Omar Artan faced a crisis that prevented him from realizing his dream of officiating at the 2026 World Cup after he was denied entry to the United States upon arriving at Miami Airport last June.

Following that incident, the Somali referee received an invitation from UEFA to officiate the UEFA Super Cup match, which featured Paris Saint-Germain against their opponent, ending with the French team winning 2-1.

Essam Abdel Fattah concluded his statements by praising the skills of the Somali referee, emphasizing that Omar Artan is considered one of the top referees in Africa in recent times, awaiting the board of the Football Association's decision regarding his request to work in the Egyptian league.
