Ministry of Sports Approves Inclusion of 5 Paralympic Sports

The Paralympic Committee had obtained approval from officials at the Ministry of Youth and Sports to include 5 sports in the Paralympic Games: wheelchair handball, goalball for the visually impaired, Paralympic weightlifting, Paralympic table tennis, and Paralympic athletics, bringing the total to 6 sports with the addition of sitting volleyball.

This came after a series of communications and consultations conducted by Dr. Hossam El-Din Mostafa in collaboration with the committee's administration and relevant authorities at both the African and international levels, representing a new achievement added to efforts to support and develop the Paralympic movement in Egypt and Africa.

The Board of Directors of the Paralympic Committee praised the ongoing communication and coordination carried out by Dr. Hossam El-Din Mostafa with the South African Volleyball Federation, the International Paralympic Volleyball Federation, the African region of the Paralympic Volleyball Federation, and the Egyptian Paralympic Volleyball Federation, aiming to include the sport in the sports program of the African Games. This enhances the chances of African teams to compete and qualify for the global Paralympic event.

This step is of great significance for the Egyptian men's and women's sitting volleyball teams, as it provides an important opportunity to enhance preparation and qualification programs, improve the technical level of players, expand the base of participation, and increase opportunities for international exposure. This supports the ambitions of Egyptian Paralympic sports to achieve outstanding results in the upcoming phase.

The Board of Directors of the Paralympic Committee expressed its gratitude and appreciation to the Republic of South Africa, as it was a candidate to host the qualifiers for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, after it showed cooperation and readiness to coordinate the transfer of the qualifiers to the Arab Republic of Egypt, to be held within the program of the African Games. This enhances Egypt's status as a center for hosting and organizing continental and international Paralympic championships.

For his part, Dr. Hossam El-Din Mostafa stated that these efforts confirm the importance of partnership and coordination between the Egyptian Paralympic Committee and national, continental, and international federations, and its commitment to providing the best opportunities for Egyptian athletes and African states to compete at the highest levels, while benefiting from Egypt's hosting of the African Games to support the progress of Paralympic sports and achieve its technical and organizational goals.

Mustafa emphasized that this development represents an important step in the preparation for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, and a positive message confirming the ongoing work to expand opportunities for participation and qualification, and to solidify Egypt's position and role in developing Paralympic sports at both the African and international levels.
