The United States Grand Prix is introducing a strange new feature.

Formula 1 has introduced us to street circuits adjacent to casinos, a pitlane tunnel, and a paddock featuring a faux marina. Now, the Circuit of the Americas aims to construct the world's largest cowboy hat, complete with an interior bar, and is hoping Guinness World Records will take notice.

This endeavor will take place at the forthcoming United States Grand Prix, where a representative from Guinness will assess the structure on the Thursday before the race weekend.

A 75-foot hat

COTA president Bobby Epstein has clarified the size of this massive creation. Made from fibreglass, it will stand 75 feet tall — approximately 23 meters — and will include a Western-themed bar accessible from Lone Star Land, a section of the circuit designated for fans. The construction of this giant hat is reportedly nearing completion.

"I believed the circuit should have a tourist attraction that could earn a Guinness World Record," Epstein shared with The Athletic. He envisioned a landmark that would be recognizable even when the F1 event isn't taking place. "Instead of a typical tent, why not create a 75-foot cowboy hat?"

Fair enough. Most of us would have opted for the tent.

No current Guinness World Record exists for the largest cowboy hat - perhaps not surprisingly, suggesting that COTA could establish the category if it is officially recognized as a record attempt by Guinness. Epstein also anticipates that the hat will remain at the venue throughout the year rather than only during the F1 race.

Lone Star Land, for those unfamiliar

If you haven't been there, Lone Star Land is COTA's ranch-themed fan area. The circuit has incorporated classic Western elements, embracing their popularity throughout the state, and the fan zone frequently features performances such as line dancing and rope tricks, along with the occasional Stetson hat in the mix.

How big is big, even for Texas?

The hat faces some local competition. Fox San Antonio reports that the largest cowboy boot sculpture measures 10.74 meters tall in San Antonio, meaning COTA's hat would overshadow it at nearly double the height. Guinness has also documented 39,013 individuals wearing cowboy hats at Angel Stadium in Anaheim in 2012. That’s an assembly COTA's grandstands could potentially rival, provided everyone remembers to bring a Stetson.

What else is happening in Austin?

The weekend may witness Kimi Antonelli clinching a championship title in Austin, and Williams intends to showcase its Marvel-themed show car in the fan zone. You can learn more about that by clicking below.
