The chair umpire, Mohamed Lahyani, spoke with Medvedev and tournament officials before the Russian player was disqualified from the match a few minutes later.

The disqualification came while Djokovic was looking to close out the match, leading 7-5, 5-3.

The spectator, who was sitting in the front row, covered his left eye with his hands and appeared to be in pain as he left the stands with the help of stadium staff.

After the match, Medvedev expressed deep regret over the injury to the fan.

He told reporters after the match: "I sincerely apologize to the fan, first and foremost," adding that what happened was "an accident 100 percent," and that he wanted to apologize to the fan personally.

Djokovic will face Australian Alex de Minaur in the final, who advanced earlier on Monday after his Polish opponent Hubert Hurkacz withdrew due to an injury sustained during the second set.
