Wahbi reassures fans about Diaz's injury
Moroccan national team coach Mohamed Wahbi expressed his satisfaction with the performance of the "Atlas Lions" during their 2-0 victory over Gabon in the opening match of their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, confirming that the team is heading in the right direction, despite the increasing reliance on several young players.
Wahbi added during the post-match press conference that the current phase requires patience, especially with the opportunity given to many emerging talents, emphasizing the importance of continuing to work diligently and with discipline.
The national coach stated that the goal is to build a team capable of competing for titles, pointing to his strong confidence in the young players, several of whom demonstrated their ability to take responsibility and deliver a promising performance during the match against Gabon.
The match saw the emergence of several young faces, such as Ali Maamer, Yasser Zabiri, and Abdullah Wazan, who were given the chance to prove their worth, aligning with the coaching staff's approach to gradually renew the squad.
Wahbi stressed that reliance on youth will continue in upcoming matches, explaining that instilling confidence in players and giving them opportunities is a fundamental part of his plan with the national team. Regarding Brahim Diaz's condition, the national coach clarified that the player is suffering from a minor injury that prevented him from participating against Gabon, noting that medical examinations, including an MRI, confirmed that the injury is not serious.
Wahbi revealed that Diaz arrived at the national team's camp with some pain before undergoing the necessary tests, adding that the player expressed a strong desire to stay with the team in hopes of joining the next match against Lesotho in South Africa.
Wahbi indicated that Diaz will continue his treatment program under the supervision of the medical staff, and his condition will be evaluated before a final decision is made regarding his participation in the upcoming match.
Wahbi concluded by affirming that the Moroccan national team's project relies on continuing to work and instilling confidence in young players while maintaining discipline and seriousness, with the aim of forming a group capable of competing strongly and achieving titles in upcoming competitions.
