Gideon Mensah brings both quality and reliability to FC Köln, according to the sporting director.

Bundesliga club FC Köln is confident that the acquisition of Ghanaian international Gideon Mensah will bolster their squad with enhanced quality and stability as they approach the 2026/27 season. The 27-year-old left-back has signed a long-term contract with the German side after departing French Ligue 1 team AJ Auxerre as a free agent when his contract expired. Sporting director Thomas Kessler mentioned that the club had been observing Mensah for a considerable time before finalizing the transfer, highlighting the defender's reliability, tactical awareness, and strong performances for both club and country. "We have kept an eye on Gideon for quite a while and are thrilled to have secured his services at FC. He brings valuable international experience, showcased impressive performances in France last season, and affirmed his quality at the World Cup. Gideon is a player who consistently prioritizes the team and stands out for his tactical discipline, defensive prowess, and energy. With his attributes, he will enhance the quality and stability of our squad while providing us with more options in that position," Kessler stated. Mensah joins Köln after spending four seasons with Auxerre, where he became a mainstay in the French top division. The Ghana international also solidified his standing at the FIFA World Cup, featuring in every minute of the Black Stars' journey as they progressed to the Round of 32 before being eliminated by Colombia. In the 2025/26 Ligue 1 season, Mensah made 30 league appearances and tallied two assists, playing a key role in helping Auxerre secure their top-flight status before seeking a new opportunity in Germany.
