Gideon Mensah successfully completes his medical examination and signs with FC Koln.

The 27-year-old left-back will don the No. 14 shirt for Koln, with an official announcement anticipated soon. Mensah joins Koln as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with French Ligue 2 team AJ Auxerre on June 30, 2026. He traveled to Cologne on Friday morning, went through his medical check, and officially signed a contract believed to extend until 2029. The 44-cap Ghana international was a standout player for the Black Stars during the 2026 World Cup, participating in every match of their journey. His experience at the elite level and his dual capability in both defense and offense made him a key target for Koln. The club has been searching for a dependable left-back since the retirement of iconic player Jonas Hector. Mensah's addition is expected to enhance the stability of the defense as Koln aims to improve upon their mid-table finish from the previous season. Throughout his career, Mensah has played for various European clubs, including Red Bull Salzburg, Zulte Waregem, Vitoria Guimaraes, Sturm Graz, Bordeaux, and Auxerre. He has also represented Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. He becomes Koln's second acquisition of the summer transfer window, following midfielder Eric Martel's signing from RB Leipzig. The club is also reportedly pursuing Australian midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler and Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez. Mensah is set to be officially introduced by Koln on Saturday, with plans to present him to fans at their training facility.
