Karun Chandhok remarked that Kimi Antonelli steering clear of Ferrari was the "smartest decision" made by his father.

Former Formula 1 racer and Sky Sports analyst Karun Chandhok asserts that Kimi Antonelli's journey through the Mercedes junior program instead of Ferrari’s is the "most favorable decision" his father Marco could have made.

Antonelli, who stepped in for seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025, is currently excelling in the 2026 season. He became the youngest driver to top the standings following consecutive victories at the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix and has continued to build on his success. 

Last weekend, he triumphed at his home Italian Grand Prix, marking his seventh win of the season. He now boasts a 66-point advantage over his Mercedes teammate George Russell as they head to the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.

During his appearance on the Sky Sports F1 Show, Chandhok pondered Antonelli's route to the series and contended that although the Ferrari fanbase would have relished the presence of an Italian driver, the pressure on the 20-year-old would have been overwhelming had he been part of the Ferrari junior program.

"Reflecting on that weekend, I genuinely believe that not making him a Ferrari junior, not placing him in front of Ferrari, and opting for the Mercedes route is truly the best thing Marco Antonelli has done for his son," the former driver remarked.

"This has alleviated the pressure in many aspects. Can you envision if he were there as a Ferrari Italian driver? The stress would be unimaginable. Mercedes has done a remarkable job of supporting him and guiding him to this point.

"I noticed Kimi's parents and his sister near the Mercedes motorhome post-race and they were beaming with joy, especially since he had just claimed victory at his home grand prix with many friends and family present.

"I couldn't help but think that they have effectively reduced some of the pressure by not having him associated with Ferrari. For the benefit of the sport and Ferrari, I hope that in 10-15 years, after Kimi has achieved significant milestones, he might eventually join Ferrari. It would be wonderful for Ferrari to have him in the future, but for now, it’s advantageous for him to begin his career outside of Ferrari."
