Kofi Adams supports the decision to dismiss Otto Addo, stating that Ghana couldn't approach the World Cup solely by depending on divine intervention.

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has defended the choice to dismiss Otto Addo prior to the commencement of the 2026 World Cup. The 50-year-old coach was let go following a series of disappointing results as the team readied for the tournament in North America, despite successfully leading them to qualification. With just two months remaining until the event, Carlos Queiroz was brought on board with a temporary contract. In an interview, the Minister dismissed the notion that Ghana should have kept Otto Addo despite the unfavorable performance leading up to the World Cup. When asked if Ghana should have simply retained Otto Addo, the Minister replied, "No. If you consider the losses we faced in all our friendlies post-qualifications, relying solely on faith doesn’t suffice; we cannot approach the World Cup with just faith. I don’t agree with that perspective at all." He argued that the progress under new coach Carlos Queiroz indicated that the decision was justified, even though the coach had limited time to prepare the squad ahead of the tournament. "If you observe the tactics of our new coach, Carlos, and examine our friendlies against Wales, Panama, England, and Croatia, it’s evident that with more time, the results could have been significantly different." The Minister highlighted that the enhancements were particularly noticeable in Ghana's defensive structure. "It was primarily defensive." When questioned about Ghana's strategy, which resembled a defensive approach, the Minister defended the team's tactical choices. "Well, that’s also a facet of the game, and we were executing passes effectively." Under Carlos Queiroz, Ghana kicked off their campaign with a slim 1-0 win against Panama before managing a goalless draw with England. A 2-1 loss to Croatia in their final Group C match saw the Black Stars end up third in the standings, which was enough to secure a spot in the Round of 32. However, Ghana's World Cup run concluded following a 1-0 loss to Colombia in the knockout stage. The Black Stars will now redirect their attention to the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, where they have been placed in Group C alongside Côte d'Ivoire, Somalia, and The Gambia. The qualification process is set to commence in September.
