Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi has voiced his backing for Carlos Queiroz to continue as Ghana's head coach, highlighting the Portuguese manager's beneficial impact on the national squad.
Queiroz, who is 73 years old, was appointed in April under a short-term arrangement after Otto Addo was let go in March, taking the reins of the Black Stars in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Even though he led Ghana through the tournament, questions remain about his future. Speculation surged following a social media update from the seasoned coach that seemed to imply he had resigned.
Nevertheless, Queiroz later clarified in a widely circulated interview that he had not stepped down and was still in his role.
Ati Zigi, who participated in two matches under Queiroz during the World Cup in North America, admitted he is not privy to the coach's contractual details but believes keeping him would be advantageous for the national team.
"I’m not aware of his contract status, but I think he’s an excellent coach, and I appreciate the positivity he fostered in camp. If the leadership decides to keep him, that would be a wise choice," he shared with Sporty FM.
The Black Stars demonstrated promising potential at the World Cup, albeit falling short of a significant run. Ghana kicked off the tournament with a gritty 1-0 win over Panama, followed by a goalless stalemate against England.
A 2-1 loss to Croatia in their final group match positioned them third in Group L, allowing them to progress to the Round of 32.
Their journey ultimately concluded after a narrow 1-0 setback against Colombia, with Jhon Arias netting the crucial goal that ended the hopes of the four-time African champions.
With their World Cup campaign behind them, Ghana's attention now turns to the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, set to commence in September. The Black Stars have been placed in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, Somalia, and Rwanda as they strive to secure a spot in the continental tournament.
