Slimani: "A tribute? I expect nothing..."

Determined to continue his career, Islam Slimani shared his thoughts on his future, the Algeria national team, and his absence under Vladimir Petkovic.

At 38 years old, Islam Slimani has no intention of ending his journey. A free agent since leaving CFR Cluj, the all-time top scorer for the Algeria national team aims to take on one last challenge. In an interview with L’Équipe, the striker was clear about his intentions: “I don’t want to stop; I have the ability to continue.” He insists he still feels fit and is eager to finish his career in a project that brings him joy.

Slimani also discussed the situation of the Greens at length. Still with L’Équipe, he believes that the FAF made a significant decision by changing the coaching staff after the 2026 World Cup. The former Sporting player now calls for Brahim Hemdani and Anthar Yahia, two former internationals who are well-versed in the Algerian environment and the demands of African football, to be allowed to work.

The striker also mentioned his absence from the national team under Vladimir Petkovic. While he respects the choices of the former coach, Slimani admits he was less pleased with the manner of the decisions. “We had a phone conversation, and he said things that did not happen,” he notably stated to L’Équipe, while clarifying that he does not take it personally.

With 46 goals in 105 appearances, Slimani remains an iconic figure in the recent history of the Fennecs. However, he is not expecting a symbolic final call-up or any special tribute, believing that the interests of Algeria should take precedence over any individual considerations.

“ If that were to happen, it should have already occurred... I expect nothing, it hasn’t crossed my mind. I have done what I needed to do for my country, for my family, and the people who support me. After whether there is a tribute or not, that is not what matters most, what counts is the interest of our country. ”
