South Africa Midfield Sensation Passes Away Just Weeks After Appearing at the 2026 World Cup

Jayden Adams, a midfielder for South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns, has tragically passed away at the age of 25, shortly after representing his nation in the World Cup, as reported by BBC Sport.

Adams participated in all three of South Africa’s group stage matches during the tournament, where they advanced to the knockout phase before being eliminated by co-hosts Canada in the round of 32.

“I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn of Jayden Adams' passing,” stated Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture.

“South African football has lost one of its most promising young talents, and our country mourns together with his family, teammates, and the millions of fans who witnessed his journey from a budding academy player to a full-fledged Bafana Bafana international.”

Authorities in South Africa have launched an investigation following the discovery of a 25-year-old man's body at a residence in Schotschekloof, a neighborhood in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.

McKenzie further remarked: “The circumstances surrounding Jayden’s passing have not been confirmed, and I urge the media and the public to show restraint and compassion, avoiding speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are afforded the privacy they need during this incredibly challenging time.

“Any official updates will be communicated by the relevant parties in due time.”

Adams started in the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Group A, despite receiving the heartbreaking news of his grandmother’s passing just hours before the match.

The South African Football Players Union expressed its devastation over the premature loss of Adams, who made his international debut in 2022.

“Jayden had recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, embodying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and excellence.

“His passing represents an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football community, and the broader country.

“South African football has lost a talented player, a dedicated ambassador of the sport, and a young individual who still had so much ahead of him.”

Adams began his career at Stellenbosch FC before transferring to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he achieved league and African Champions League victories.

He was a key member of the South Africa squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before being selected for Hugo Broos’ World Cup team, where they made history by advancing to the knockout stages for the first time.

“It’s incredibly tragic to hear that South African midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after participating in his country’s historic Fifa World Cup journey,” remarked Fifa president Gianni Infantino.

“My condolences, along with those of everyone at Fifa and the global football community, go out to his family, friends, and teammates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be profoundly missed. May he rest in peace.”
