US President Donald Trump has vowed to provide a $5,000 payment to every adult American if Republicans regain control of both houses of Congress in the upcoming November midterm elections.

This announcement, made during a Republican convention in Dallas, Texas, could potentially impose a financial burden of approximately $1.3 trillion on the federal government, considering there are nearly 270 million adults in the United States.

Trump did not clarify how these payments would be financed or distributed, only mentioning that recipients would be required to spend the funds within the US.

The proposal has sparked concerns regarding its financial feasibility, legality, and the practicality of implementation.

Democrats have labeled the promise as an “empty gesture”.

Vice-President JD Vance suggested that the payments might be funded through revenues generated by Trump’s tariff strategies. He framed the proposal as a dividend for American workers, claiming the administration was gathering substantial amounts from tariffs levied on foreign products and businesses.

Previously, Trump had floated a similar concept, proposing $2,000 payments sourced from tariff revenues.

Trump has defended his administration’s stance on Iran, asserting that the economic repercussions of the conflict are essential to deter Tehran from developing nuclear capabilities. The ongoing war has disrupted energy markets, with the Strait of Hormuz being largely closed. This crucial waterway typically transports about a fifth of the global oil and liquefied natural gas supply.

The turmoil has driven oil prices up and intensified pressure on Trump to resolve the conflict.

Before the Republican convention, Trump cautioned supporters that the war would persist past the midterm elections and that oil prices were unlikely to decrease before then.

At the convention, he revisited the topic of consumer spending power.

“If the Republicans claim victory in the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both,” Trump declared, “I will distribute a dividend of $5,000 to every adult citizen in the United States of America.”

He also emphasized that the funds should be spent domestically, indicating he did not want Americans using the payments for purchases in countries like Canada, China, or Germany.

It remains uncertain how such expenditures would be monitored.

The White House has yet to disclose further details regarding the proposed initiative, including whether it would require Congressional approval and how the administration plans to generate sufficient funds to cover the payments.
