David Stevenson, the Country Director of the World Food Programme, stated that addressing the Ebola crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo requires more than just health interventions.
He noted that the area is already grappling with conflict, displacement, and acute food insecurity, emphasizing that hunger complicates families' ability to adhere to health guidelines and contribute to the broader response efforts.
Stevenson added that over 500,000 individuals in Ituri are experiencing IPC Phase 4 hunger, perilously close to starvation, and cautioned that the outbreak is progressing quicker than the response efforts can keep up.
The WFP is actively engaged in logistics, humanitarian flights, supply chains, and providing hot meals at treatment facilities.
It is also involved in constructing treatment centers, yet Stevenson asserts that immediate additional resources are critical to deliver food aid to isolated regions and assist the communities most impacted by Ebola.
