Harry Kane, the captain of England, has stated that the squad needs to elevate their performance against Argentina in the semi-final of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026.
A double from Jude Bellingham propelled the Three Lions into the semi-finals after Andreas Schjelderup had initially put Ståle Solbakken’s team ahead with a well-placed shot.
In his post-match comments, the Bayern Munich forward mentioned to ITV that England has areas for enhancement despite their progression to the tournament's semi-finals.
He also emphasized the team’s determination, noting that England has consistently displayed the mindset necessary for success in knockout matches.
“[Tuchel] just remarked in the locker room, obviously, wow, huge congratulations, and we should relish it and celebrate,” Kane shared with ITV, as referenced by The Athletic.
“However, he still feels there’s a part of him that recognizes we can improve, which is ultimately a positive sign. If we’re in a World Cup semi-final and aware that we can still elevate our game, then we need to view that as encouraging,” he continued.
“We possess the essential elements as a team, which we demonstrated once more today. If we can just start working a bit more effectively with the ball and in possession, then we have some significant matches ahead,” Kane conveyed to ITV, as quoted by The Athletic.

In reflecting on the loss, Solbakken commended his players for their competitiveness against one of the world’s elite teams.
“We have been performing at the highest standard, and the margins didn’t favor us, but that’s how it goes, and now we need to take a moment to breathe,” Solbakken stated, as reported by Reuters.
“That’s the reality at this level; it doesn’t get any more intense than this, and we faced some challenges early on, in the first 20 minutes, but I truly commend the boys,” the 58-year-old added.
