Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane has conveyed his profound disappointment following England's 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Thomas Tuchel’s team appeared to be on track for England's first men’s World Cup final since their triumph in 1966 when Anthony Gordon scored to put them ahead after 55 minutes in a highly charged match.
However, Argentina found their inspiration and reversed the game when Enzo Fernandez netted a stunning equalizer with just five minutes remaining, followed by Lautaro Martinez nodding in a last-minute winner from Lionel Messi’s delivery.
In the aftermath of the match, Kane shared with the BBC that the players strayed from their tactical game plan and fell into the trap of trying to defend a slim lead instead of maintaining their attacking momentum.
He expressed his gratitude towards the fans and his teammates who exerted every bit of effort on the field, describing the heartbreaking 2-1 collapse in stoppage time as devastating.
“I’m gutted for the boys, gutted for everyone – the team, the staff, the fans,” said Kane, England’s captain, to the BBC.
“We performed well for the majority of the game. After going 1-0 up, it felt like we tried to hold on, which at this level isn’t sufficient.
“So, I’m just really disappointed because we’ve put in so much hard work to get here, and the lads have given everything, including running, blood, sweat, and tears.

“After we scored, whether it was them pushing more players forward or us struggling to match them man-to-man, it was just relentless pressure.
“The lads were making crucial blocks, but ultimately, it just wasn’t sufficient. When we took the lead, the plan was to push forward for another goal.
“Then once they scored their two goals, it became about trying to regain something, but we couldn’t quite find the momentum to get back into the game.”
