Former Argentina forward Sergio Agüero has revealed that Lionel Messi is not motivated by personal accolades ahead of tomorrow’s FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final showdown.
He emphasized that Messi values team achievements more than individual honors such as the Golden Boot or the Ballon d’Or, with his main drive being to secure victories and continually enhance his skill set.

Agüero mentioned that Messi considers trophies, particularly international titles like the World Cup and Copa America, to be significantly more important than any individual achievement.
“Leo is the team’s captain and continues to astonish everyone. What Leo is accomplishing is remarkable regardless of the perspective. Reaching this semi-final stage is a tremendous accomplishment, although it doesn’t catch me off guard.
“We all recognize his competitive nature and his exceptional talent. Yet, I’m confident that what he values most is the team reaching its objectives, rather than his personal milestones.”
In the meantime, Messi is exhibiting outstanding form at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, netting 8 goals to share the lead in the tournament as he propelled Argentina to the semi-finals.
