David Croft praises Kimi Antonelli's composure as the F1 championship pursuit intensifies.

Sky Sports Formula 1's lead commentator David Croft has expressed his belief that Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli will secure a world championship at a younger age than Max Verstappen.

Antonelli showcased an outstanding performance at the recent Italian Grand Prix, advancing from 19th on the starting grid to clinch victory in front of his local fans.

The 20-year-old is now the first home driver to triumph at Monza in six decades, widening his championship lead over teammate George Russell to 66 points ahead of this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix.

While appearing on the Sky Sports F1 Show, Croft drew parallels between Antonelli's current path and that of Verstappen, who debuted in F1 at 17, won his inaugural race at 18, and claimed his first championship title at 24.

"Twelve months ago, he was at Monza and had just come out of a challenging phase where, following a podium finish in Canada, things had started to unravel and he was feeling dissatisfied," Croft noted. "He was diligently working with Bono [Peter Bonnington] to rectify the situation and then went on an impressive run towards the conclusion of the season.

"It seems as though he's maturing with less experience than Max. Max had that season with Toro Rosso and a few races before moving up to the Red Bull team.

"He is achieving milestones earlier than Max. He’s on track to be a younger world champion than Max was. He’s a younger polesitter. He’s a younger grand prix victor. He’s accomplishing everything quite early and displaying significant maturity in the process.

"I’ve noticed and heard signs on the track this year indicating that he is managing his emotions. He’s becoming calmer. He’s keeping a handle on things that might have overwhelmed him a year ago.

"This is why many are considering him a generational talent, as it’s one thing to possess talent, but another to wield it with control and demonstrate maturity at an age where I think we can all agree we likely wouldn’t have been capable of what Kimi Antonelli is achieving."

Antonelli took over the lead in the standings after securing consecutive victories in the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix. He went on to achieve four additional wins before the summer break, with his triumph in Italy marking his seventh win in F1.

Sebastian Vettel holds the record for the youngest F1 champion in history, earning his first title in 2010 at the age of 23 years and 134 days.
