Michael Edwards has stepped down from his role as Chief Executive Officer of Football for Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the ownership group of Liverpool.
His exit comes two years into a three-year contract, driven by dissatisfaction with FSG’s inability to secure a second European club to create a multi-club structure.

Edwards, who was previously Liverpool’s sporting director, returned to FSG in March 2024 to manage the transition following Jurgen Klopp’s tenure and to lead FSG’s wider football aspirations.
The goal of developing a multi-club organization was the main reason he accepted the position.
However, after FSG effectively abandoned those acquisition strategies earlier this year, Edwards indicated his desire to resign last autumn and has now fully stepped down.
A statement noted: “Fenway Sports Group (FSG), a global enterprise involved in sports, marketing, media, entertainment, and real estate, announced today that Michael Edwards will depart from his role as CEO of Football before the commencement of Liverpool FC’s pre-season training, concluding his second term with the organization during which he managed Liverpool’s football operations and supported the ongoing expansion of FSG’s broader football goals.”

His departure signifies the conclusion of a planned transition, but it adds to the increasing uncertainty behind the scenes at Anfield.
FSG President Mike Gordon is expected to take on a more active role in managing football operations, as the ownership is not anticipated to find a direct successor for Edwards.
