Ajax could make a mistake with the arrival of Yves Bissouma. This is the view of Mike Verweij, a journalist for De Telegraaf. The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder does not seem to be earning an exorbitant salary at Johan Cruijff Arena.
With Bissouma, Ajax, as many know, is signing a somewhat unpredictable player. “I spoke with several people who had seen photos of his presentation, and they wondered if he had had any previous issues. But that seems unlikely to me,” Verweij stated on Kick-off, the football podcast of De Telegraaf.
“Everyone deserves a mistake and deserves a second chance. Maybe even a third or fourth, in this case…”
Moreover, Ajax needed an additional midfielder following the departure of Youri Regeer. Bissouma will have to compete with Sofyan Amrabat and Jorthy Mokio, among others. “I understand that Jordi Cruijff was able to sign him at a relatively low price, partly due to some past mistakes. His salary seems quite reasonable,” Verweij revealed.
Ajax did not have to pay any transfer fees, as the Malian international left Tottenham this summer. Bissouma signed for one season, with an option for an additional year.
According to Verweij, this option will be activated after a certain number of matches. “Normally, Ajax cannot go wrong with this transfer,” concluded the club analyst.
Bissouma did not participate in Saturday's Eredivisie match against Excelsior (2-2). He is still waiting for his work permit.
