Ajax suffered a heavy blow against Excelsior on Saturday night. This is the conclusion drawn by Dutch morning newspapers.

The Amsterdam players could only manage a 2-2 draw at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, losing valuable points in the process.

Ajax faces serious consequences in the title race

“Ajax stumbles again against Excelsior in a thrilling match, despite an impressive appearance from Tolu,” headlines Algemeen Dagblad.

“The team led by Michel Sánchez displayed some beautiful phases of play, but conceding another goal just before halftime and a series of missed chances severely compromised their title challenge.”

What about Arokodare?

The morning newspaper highlighted the crucial role of substitute Tolu Arokodare at Ajax. “At Ajax, fan-favorite Tolu was greeted with a huge ovation from the crowd. The Nigerian forward quickly showcased his talent: one minute after Excelsior's 1-2, he equalized with a subtle deflection following a great move by Gloukh. The Johan Cruijff ArenA erupted in joy once again.”

“With Tolu's influence, Ajax did everything possible to secure the three points. In the last twenty minutes, the Amsterdam players created several clear chances,” the newspaper adds. Notably, there were attempts from Oscar Gloukh (hitting the post) and Arokodare (cleared off the line).
