Aouar: "Algeria has the potential to achieve great things"

Although he was not included in the latest list for the Algerian national team training camp in September, Houssem Aouar remains attentive to the news surrounding the Greens. In an in-depth interview with Koora Break, the Al-Ittihad midfielder shared his attachment to Algeria, his experiences with the national team, and the developments within the squad.

Born in France and trained at Olympique Lyonnais, Aouar emphasized that Algeria has always held a special significance in his life since childhood. "I was born in France and grew up there, but every summer, I spent my holidays in Algeria. Even in winter, during the breaks, I was there. My whole family is originally from Algeria," he revealed. The 28-year-old player also stated that he still has many relatives and friends there: "It’s my country. Thanks to football, I am even more thrilled to be able to play for it. It’s an honor to wear this jersey."

Aouar also spoke about the unique feeling of representing the Greens. In his view, the pressure he feels is different from that in club football, as he embodies the hopes of an entire nation. "When you play for Algeria, the whole country stops. All eyes are on you," he explained, also highlighting the responsibility that comes with being an Algerian international.

The Al-Ittihad midfielder then expressed his optimism regarding the new generation. "I think we have good players, very good players, recruits, and young talents," he asserted. He emphasized their ability to play with more freedom: "When you are young, you don’t think as much, you just go for it." However, for him, talent alone is not enough; the team must succeed in creating a true synergy among its members. "We can achieve great things. This national team deserves it," he declared.

Finally, Aouar paid a heartfelt tribute to Riyad Mahrez and Aïssa Mandi, who were recently excluded from the squad. He believes that both players have contributed immensely to the Greens and have always taken responsibility in critical moments. Regarding Mahrez, his testimony is particularly striking: "For my generation, he is the best Algerian player of all time. It was an honor to play alongside him."

Although he was not selected by Brahim Hemdani for the September camp, Aouar remains deeply connected to the Algerian team and maintains an optimistic outlook for the future of the Greens.
