CAF Report Highlights Coach Wahbi's Journey
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) highlighted the experience of Morocco's national team coach, Mohamed Wahbi, in a report published on its official website, showcasing a model that combines talent development and success at the senior team level, ahead of his participation in the CAF strategy conference set to take place in Cape Verde from October 7 to 9.
The report noted that Wahbi, 49, took charge of the "Atlas Lions" just three months before the 2026 World Cup, succeeding Walid Regragui, and managed to lead the team to the quarter-finals, making Morocco the first African nation to reach the last eight in consecutive tournaments.
The report focused on Wahbi's coaching career, which began at the Anderlecht Academy in Belgium, where he worked on youth development and won the Belgian U-17 league title in 2018, before moving on to work within the Moroccan national teams framework.
It also mentioned his victory with the U-20 national team, winning the 2025 World Cup in Chile after defeating Argentina in the final, alongside the emergence of several Moroccan talents during the tournament, such as Othmane Maâmmar and Yassir Zebiri.
CAF reported that Wahbi continued this path with the senior national team, which began its 2026 World Cup journey with a draw against Brazil, followed by wins over Scotland and Haiti, before overcoming the Netherlands on penalties and defeating Canada 3-0, while his adventure ended against France in the quarter-finals with a 2-0 loss.
The Confederation emphasized that Wahbi's experience highlights the importance of linking player training, coach development, and continuity of work between youth teams and the senior national team, as these are essential elements for building sustainable success for African football by 2030.
