David Coulthard suggests an F1 sprint event for Madrid following the inclusion of Monaco in 2027.

"We were putting in 100,000 kilometers during testing," Coulthard reflected, comparing today’s calendar to his experiences in the sport.

"We were testing every week. We had a dedicated test team. So, testing with just you and your teammate, or possibly a few other cars, day after day... it was draining. It was mentally exhausting, and there was no reward at the end besides, let’s say, job satisfaction."

Rather than endless private sessions, the ex-McLaren driver expressed that he would have favored the contemporary, race-focused itinerary.

"A grand prix gives you that sense of accomplishment that the history books will record what you achieved as a team," he noted.

"Thus, I would have enjoyed it. Monaco has been included as a sprint on a circuit that offers few overtaking chances. This will lead to more excitement. So, it would likely have been beneficial in Madrid if we had a sprint there, too."

The Spanish Grand Prix on 13 September marked the inaugural event at the new Madring circuit. While expectations were high for the new venue, which replaces the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit under a 10-year agreement, it received significant criticism for its limited overtaking potential. 

McLaren's Lando Norris claimed pole position in Madrid and established a solid lead in the race's opening phase but lost it during a poorly timed virtual safety car period. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli seized the opportunity to take the lead and celebrated his eighth victory of the season.
