Esteban Ocon has labeled himself a "free agent" as Haas has yet to finalize its driver roster for the 2027 Formula 1 season, although he hasn't dismissed the idea of remaining with the team.

Despite the Frenchman showcasing significantly better performances recently, which have largely gone unrewarded due to Haas' declining form since the early season, Ocon's position has been precarious for a while.

Haas is currently utilizing its testing of previous cars (TPC) initiative to explore potential candidates to partner with Ollie Bearman next season, with Ferrari junior Rafael Camara, reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli, and current reserve Ryo Hirakawa among those considered.

Ocon confirmed he is exploring other prospects for 2027, while Haas continues to evaluate its driver combination for the upcoming year. Recent speculation suggests the team may favor Camara - the current reigning F3 champion and second in this year's F2 standings - for next season, though team principal Ayao Komatsu mentioned during the Spanish GP that he had "maybe five" drivers in the mix.

"Yes, at the moment I am definitely a free agent for next year," Ocon remarked.

"There are matters being discussed that are beyond my control, and there are certain issues that I can't influence. So I will keep pushing until the end of the year and see how things unfold."

When asked if remaining with Haas was a possibility, Ocon remained non-committal, responding: "let's see".

Ocon also expressed satisfaction with his recent performances, having dealt with an inconsistent car early in the season.

It remains uncertain whether the issues stem from aerodynamic sensitivity or a parts quality control concern; Komatsu has indicated that both could be contributing factors, and the team is still looking into the situation at hand.

"We know it's been a persistent issue," he noted. "It's reassuring that I'm performing well. Clearly, my performance hasn't been a problem this year.

"I've delivered every time I've had a functioning car. I was the last one to score points in Monaco. I was close to scoring in Madrid. There have been numerous instances where I've excelled despite the car's underperformance. It's been evident.

"Everyone in the team has been closely monitoring the situation, striving to resolve the problem. We haven't shied away from it. However, it's certainly been disappointing at times to face these challenges."

Bearman was asked if he felt prepared to step up as the team leader should Ocon leave, and the Briton mentioned that he had gained valuable insights from his teammate during their nearly two years together.

He pointed to Ocon's insights in the engineering meetings as something he has drawn inspiration from, along with his own advancing performances on the track.

"I've been here for, well, this is my second year as a full-time driver, but I've also spent a year as a reserve for Haas, and participated in a few races and FP1s the year prior, even getting my first FP1 in 2023. So I have a solid level of experience with the team," Bearman stated.

"I feel like I've made significant progress in both my on-track performance and in articulating my sensations in the car. That’s something I’ve certainly learned a lot from someone as experienced as Esteban. So, in that regard, it's been a valuable learning experience for me.

"Even when I compare my feedback to what it was 12 months ago, I'm not sure I would have had the confidence to solely rely on my own observations. But I believe I've taken a positive step in that area, and it’s just a typical learning journey, really."
