France: "Deep down, Benzema is Algerian," says Djaziri

In 2006, Karim Benzema sparked numerous reactions by discussing his connection to Algeria while choosing to represent France in sports. Twenty years later, his former agent reflects on the true meaning of his words.
Nearly two decades later, Karim Benzema's statements regarding his international choice continue to stir debate. In 2006, when asked about the possibility of representing Algeria, the striker stated: “It’s more for the sport, since my roots are still in the country of my parents.” This phrase was widely analyzed, with some interpreting it as an emotional inclination towards Algeria despite his decision to defend the colors of the French team.
During his appearance on the show Radio Club on RMC Sport, hosted by Daniel Riolo, Karim Djaziri, Benzema's former agent and longtime friend, addressed this controversy. When Riolo asks him if he understands that these comments might have upset some, Djaziri responds: “Why would it shock? He never claimed that he played for the French team out of self-interest. That’s how you interpreted it, but that’s not what he meant.”
For him, Benzema was simply referring to his sporting journey: “Since his childhood, he has played for France. Athletically, he is committed to the French team, so he didn’t see why he would change, even if his parents might have wished for him to represent the country of his origins.” A way to separate his professional choice from his family ties.
Riolo then reminds him that Benzema also hinted that his heart leaned towards Algeria. Djaziri asserts without reservation: “Because they are his parents, and because he was raised by Algerian parents. He is Algerian deep down.” Benzema ultimately played 97 matches and scored 37 goals with the Blues.
