Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka will miss the next four matches in the UEFA Nations League after admitting to using a forged vaccination certificate against COVID-19 during the pandemic.

In a post on his Instagram account, Xhaka noted that the topic of vaccination against COVID-19 caused him a lot of anxiety and that he had doubts about the vaccine, explaining that he obtained the vaccination certificate under those circumstances, before admitting that what he did was a mistake and expressing his regret.

The public prosecutor's office in Lucerne is investigating this matter, according to reports from Swiss media, while the player confirmed that he would fully cooperate with the authorities.

The decision to exclude Xhaka from the national team came based on a mutual agreement between him and officials from the Swiss Football Association, with association president Peter Knabel stating that both parties agreed that the team's participation in the current gathering without the player would be in the best interest of the team.

The national team management is expected to reassess Xhaka's situation after the international match period ends, before making a decision regarding his participation in upcoming competitions.
