1997 Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve has endorsed Red Bull's strategy at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

In the latter part of the race on the challenging Baku City Circuit, Max Verstappen and his teammate Isack Hadjar were positioned closely together.

Despite Hadjar having an advantage with his tires, the Milton Keynes team opted not to direct the four-time champion to relinquish his track position, allowing the French-Algerian driver to pursue the cars ahead.

Verstappen succeeded in creating a gap in the final laps as he closed in on race victor George Russell, finishing second, just 0.196 seconds behind the Mercedes driver. Hadjar, returning from a six-week wrist injury layoff, secured third place.

During a discussion on the Sky Sports F1 broadcast, Villeneuve rejected the notion that Red Bull should have swapped its drivers, commending the team's strategic assessment of the race led by Laurent Mekies.

"It was perfect," the Canadian remarked. "There was no justification for asking Max to let Isack through."

"Hadjar had the better tires, and their lap times were comparable. Eventually, they would have switched tires, and as we observed, Max created an eight-second gap on Hadjar [in the closing laps].

"Max had a greater opportunity to advance, so they made the right call."

Mekies confirmed that the team evaluated various scenarios concerning team orders.

"We assessed all these possibilities, honestly, and then decided to maintain the positions of the cars," the team principal shared with Sky Sports F1.

"Both drivers exhibited commendable discipline in that regard. A big shout-out to Isack, who raced strategically to ensure we achieved the best result for the team.

"We believed it was the optimal opportunity to challenge Piastri and Russell. It's quite challenging here not to anticipate a safety car at some point. We were all on standby for the safety car.

"Max was having difficulties with the medium tires at that moment, and we understood that the soft tires would give us a better chance. Ultimately, that’s how it unfolded.

"We are just a tenth short, but we managed to contend with him and demonstrate that we had similar pace."
