The 2026 Singapore Grand Prix was on the verge of officially commencing when turmoil struck the starting grid for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team.

Just moments before the grid was set to begin the mandatory formation lap around the Marina Bay Street Circuit, a wave of panic surged around the second row. Championship frontrunner Andrea Kimi Antonelli was secured in his seat, ready to launch his W17 from fourth place, when the mechanics identified a critical last-minute issue with the car's front brake system.

A desperate trackside fix

As per live trackside updates and onboard broadcast footage, a large contingent of Mercedes mechanics quickly converged on the front-right wheel assembly and cockpit area in a frantic race against the clock.

"There's a late problem with Kimi Antonelli's car on the grid," trackside updates confirmed as the crew kicked into overdrive. "The Mercedes mechanics are working quite frantically to resolve it."

Given that the Marina Bay Street Circuit is considered one of the most challenging tracks on the entire Formula 1 calendar for brake wear, heat management, and hydraulic integrity, entering Turn 1 with compromised calipers or air in the lines would lead to an immediate and disastrous crash. Crew members were observed vigorously inspecting ductwork, monitoring hydraulic pressures, and securing the front corner until the final FIA warning sirens instructed all team personnel to vacate the racing surface.

Championship implications at stake

For Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, this unexpected pre-race incident was a complete nightmare scenario. With George Russell already relegated to 19th on the starting grid due to a combined 60-place penalty for engine and electrical components, the team's entire scoring potential in Singapore rested solely on the young rookie's performance.

Any retirement due to brake issues would severely impact Antonelli's 84-point lead at the top of the Drivers' Championship, allowing Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen and Ferrari to make significant gains.

While Antonelli managed to pull away when the green flags signaled the formation lap, the hurried trackside repairs are now about to face the ultimate test under race conditions. Whether the quick fix can endure 62 grueling laps of extreme heat and constant deceleration remains to be seen.
