Lando Norris finishes his initial comprehensive test in McLaren’s Le Mans Hypercar.

Current Formula 1 champion Lando Norris undertook his inaugural comprehensive test driving the McLaren MCL-HY Le Mans Hypercar at Portimao on Monday.

After last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix at the newly established Madring circuit, where an ill-timed Virtual Safety Car thwarted his victory, Norris crossed into Portugal for a one-day testing session.

The British driver completed 38 laps at the Algarve International Circuit in the V6-powered vehicle, covering a total distance of 177 miles throughout the day. McLaren noted that his agenda included evaluating various development components and offering insights drawn from his vast experience in F1.

Norris received support in his first LMDh test from McLaren’s 2027 drivers Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor, who conducted additional development tasks in anticipation of the British brand’s Hypercar debut in 2027.

"First off, a huge thank you to the McLaren Hypercar Team for the opportunity to drive the MCL-HY,” he expressed. “It was fantastic for them to allow me to enjoy and explore something different, especially during their hectic preparations for next year. 

“I believe we gathered some valuable data, and I hope my contributions offered fresh insights, comments, and perspectives that could benefit the team during this vital testing phase.

“Personally, it was thrilling to collaborate with this team, and experimenting with new machinery was exhilarating. I haven't participated in a proper test outside of an F1 car for years, so the chance to engage with something different, particularly as part of the McLaren family, was quite special. 

“It was an enjoyable day in a fast car on an impressive track, aiding the team in their preparations for WEC next year. A big thanks to everyone involved, and I look forward to getting back behind the wheel in the future.”

Monday’s test follows Norris’ initial experience with the MCL-HY during its public unveiling at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.

McLaren Racing chief Zak Brown had previously expressed interest in entering both Norris and Oscar Piastri in the World Endurance Championship’s premier event, though such participation may depend on the team fielding an additional third car.

A Le Mans appearance would only be feasible if there are no conflicts with Norris’ F1 obligations next year.

While the complete 2027 WEC schedule was disclosed three months ago, with Le Mans scheduled for the weekend of 12-13 June, F1 has yet to release its calendar for next year amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

During Monday’s session, McLaren Hypercar team principal James Barclay hinted at the possibility of more future outings for Norris, without specifically mentioning any race participations.

“At McLaren Racing, we are all competitive, and participating in Formula 1, INDYCAR, and the World Endurance Championship opens up thrilling cross-series opportunities,” he stated. 

“Lando was eager to drive the MCL-HY beyond his Goodwood Hill experience, so we invited him to our private Portimão test. As we anticipated, he adapted swiftly, integrated seamlessly, and provided crucial feedback to aid the car’s development.

"It was a pleasure to have him with us, we wish him great success for the remainder of the Formula 1 season, and we eagerly await his return to the McLaren Hypercar Team soon.”
