Mbappé insists on his chance to win the Ballon d'Or

French international star Kylian Mbappé admitted that athletes feel "disappointment" when they do not achieve victories. Therefore, not winning the Ballon d'Or as the best player in the world this year would be disappointing for him and would affect his "competitive spirit," especially after having a "remarkable year individually."
In an interview with French radio station RFI, the Real Madrid forward said, "I think it's an ambition for any player, but I don't consider it an obsession. I had a good year – a remarkable year individually – and I realize that this is the most important criterion for the Ballon d'Or."
Mbappé added, "I was the top scorer in major competitions, and I believe it could be a good year for me. I feel optimistic about it."
He scored 42 goals last season with Real Madrid, including 15 goals in the UEFA Champions League, and acknowledged that not winning the award would be frustrating, saying, "Of course. I think athletes always feel disappointment when they don't receive awards. So, the most affected will be my competitive spirit."
He continued, "Well, we will see what happens," adding his thoughts on recent comments regarding the Ballon d'Or and his nomination: "I have never sought to gain everyone's consensus. Is that really possible? The truth is that I cannot be someone else. So, I won't try to learn how to be someone else; I strive to be myself, with my strengths and weaknesses, my achievements and failures, and in this way, I continue to progress."
Mbappé also touched on the recent World Cup held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, where he scored 10 goals in that edition, bringing his total World Cup goals to 22, despite France's exit in the semifinals at the hands of Spain.
He commented on that, saying, "I can't say it was disappointing. When you don't win, there is always disappointment, but I think we represented our country well."
He added, "We were an enjoyable team to watch, and I believe the fans, especially the French, really enjoyed watching our performance. I think the whole world enjoyed watching us. In the end, there is only one team that wins, and that is always the case."
The captain of the French national team emphasized, "We gave our best, but luck was not on our side this time. We will need to try again."
Mbappé also pointed out his contributions to goals during the World Cup and their impact on his chances of winning the Ballon d'Or, saying, "It is the biggest sporting event and leaves a deep mark."
He noted that "goal contributions are extremely important. In the race for the Ballon d'Or, it is clear that this is the aspect that should be focused on and highlighted. I don't think they will announce a team name when they open the envelope; they will announce a player's name, so I see it as an individual award, and I believe this is the criterion that should take priority."
Mbappé confirmed, "Of course, other factors cannot be ignored, but I see that the ability to deliver an outstanding individual performance and impress everyone is what really makes the difference in winning an award like the Ballon d'Or."
Ultimately, Mbappé revealed that he has always wanted "always" to have Portuguese coach José Mourinho, his current coach at Real Madrid, as his coach, concluding his remarks by saying, "He has always intrigued me; he is a person with great intelligence and knows exactly what to do. He is a leader, and as a coach, he is considered one of the best in the world."
