Premier League: After a strong start, Arsenal collapses against Brighton
Arsenal, unbeaten since the start of the season, suffered a stunning defeat on Saturday, September 19, at Brighton (3-0). This is the Gunners' first loss of the season, allowing Manchester City the chance to take the top spot in the Premier League.

Although this first defeat for the Gunners in the 2026-2027 season, across all competitions after seven perfect matches, seems more like an accident than a long-term trend, it is still painful. Especially since Manchester City, with the same number of points (12) but one game less, will host Sunderland on Sunday and has the opportunity to send a strong message by taking the lead in the standings.
The Gunners' defeat comes at the worst possible time, just before a long international break that will keep Mikel Arteta, the coach, away from most of his players. The Spaniard will likely reflect on the unusual weaknesses displayed by his defense, usually regarded as a model in England and Europe. His defensive line, considered the best in the country and perhaps in Europe, truly showed signs of vulnerability against Brighton with a heavy 3-0 defeat.
This defeat is a “big lesson”
“We did not live up to the expectations we have for ourselves, as well as those imposed by the Premier League,” he stated to the BBC. “I congratulate Brighton for what they accomplished. It is a big lesson for us.” The same pattern repeated itself during the first two goals conceded: the defenders chose to retreat against the ball carrier, who was free to shoot from distance. First Pascal Gross, against Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel (31st minute, 1-0), then Charalampos Kostoulas in front of Ezri Konsa and the same Gabriel (45th minute, 2-0).
The third and final goal was a case of the sprayer being sprayed, coming from a corner – Arsenal's specialty – taken by Gross, delivered to the far post for Chema Andres to head in (57th minute, 3-0). Goalkeeper David Raya then prevented a more severe collapse (90th minute) in this seaside resort in southern England.
